Operation Mincemeat has taken London by storm over recent months and it’s not hard to see why! Its jam packed with fantastic jokes, warm heartfelt moments and perfectly formed songs.

If you haven’t heard of ‘Operation Mincemeat’ it is an almost unbelievable part of British history, it was the plan to throw Hitler off course during World War Two using a dead body and some fake documents alluding to an invasion that was never going to actually happen. The plan worked and the war was won!

This show has had a long journey to the West End, from fringe to regional theatre it’s taken 5 years to reach the Fortune Theatre, but it’s been well worth the wait. The writing from Natasha Hodgson, Zoë Roberts, David Cumming and Felix Hagan is slick and very clever with a very unique style it’s entertaining from start to finish.

Hodgson, Roberts and Cumming all-star in the show alongside Jak Malone and Claire-Marie Hall. This is a real team effort on stage with each actor playing a ‘lead’ as well as supporting characters, this shows the pieces fringe beginnings and is executed wonderfully throughout.

The standout moment comes from Jak Malone as Hester Leggett singing a hauntingly beautiful ‘Dear Bill’, a love letter to a man away at war which brings tears to the eyes of several audience members. The opening of act 2 is very well done, and reminiscent of ‘Springtime for Hitler’ from The Producers but with a more modern twist and sound to it leaving us laughing our heads off throughout the number.

A lot must be said for the design of the show, Ben Stones has clearly thought out the changing locations and the pace of the show. On the surface it looks to be a simple design but as the show moves forward you see there are some clever tricks and design elements used to bring this story to life.

Operation Mincemeat plays at the Fortune Theatre, London until June 2024. Tickets available: www.operationmincemeat.com
