A Jaffa Cake Musical

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are many questions in this world...not many as important as the one asked in this show: Is it a cake...or a biscuit? Go along and find out for yourself in this sensational new show!

There are many questions in this world…one of the most important being: Is it a cake, or is it a biscuit?  This show tells the story of the fate of a Jaffa Cake being defined as part of the 1991 trial in which HMRC attempted to prove it was a biscuit so they could add more VAT to the cost.

I always say you can write a musical about anything if you try hard enough, and this show really proves that. You wouldn’t think a musical about a trial would be very exciting but my goodness this is such a fun show! Giggle Mug theatre have a list of previous shows which on the surface seem silly and trivial but have a deeper heart to them and this latest edition is no different.

The story follows Kevin who at the behest of his family becomes a lawyer and is chosen to represent the Jaffa Cake team at trial. Although Kevin doesn’t quite understand why it matters at first, he soon realises how important it is to the owner of the company and it’s not just about money in this case. He goes up against Katherine, an old university friend who does not take it easy on him, pushing each debate further and further at trial.

The entire ensemble is fantastic; Sam Cochrane (Kevin) is the writer of the show and had done a fantastic job at both the book and score. There are strong ballads, fun upbeat dance numbers and even a rap or two thrown in. Sam has an exceptional talent as both an actor and creator of theatre. Sabrina Messer as Katherine, the opposing lawyer in the case, shines in this role. She brings the perfect level of cold competitiveness to the role before letting that slide and showing us a warm side. Katie Pritchard in the role of Tax Man is sensational. She brings a huge energy and an even bigger voice to the role which fills the space.

This is a wonderfully warm, hilarious and fun show and one for any musical theatre fan whether you enjoy Jaffa Cakes or not!
