Eyes Closed Mouths Open

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the third outing for the comedy sketch duo Grubby Little Mitts, made up of Rosie Nicholls and Sullivan Brown they have brought together a collection of hilarious 2–3-minute sketches in their brand new show ‘Eyes Closed, Mouths Open’.

This is currently a work-in-progress show, so things may well have changed by the time you go and see it, but I have no doubt it will continue to be just as brilliant! Grubby Little Mitts have become well known for their chaotic, surreal brand of comedy, taking the audience on a whirlwind journey through their sketches, some of which link, some which are stand-alone stories.

Rosie and Sullivan work incredibly well together, both bringing unique energy to the performance. It never feels like a fight to be the ‘funny one’ in this pairing, they both excel in different performance areas and are both allowed to shine in the show. They both have great physicality and wonderful comic timing, even when things went a little wrong they both kept their pace well and didn’t let it throw them off their stride.

Some sketches feel stronger than others, but none miss the mark completely. There doesn’t seem to be an overall theme, they are unique in their stories; a waitress obsessed with aliens, meteorologists who have a budding romance in amongst some freak weather patterns and a 6-foot owl woman making an appearance too. It’s wild, frenzied and full of laughs!

As this is a work-in-progress show there were some jokes that didn’t land as well as others, and unfortunately music being played at a loud volume towards the end of the show meant a few punchlines were missed, which was a shame but I think with a small adjustment to the sound levels the payoff would be received well by the audience. Overall, this was a fantastic way to spend an hour, with laughs from start to finish that will leave your sides hurting by the end!

Grubby Little Mitts are heading to Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year - tickets are available now!
