Be Water is making its premier as part of the Pinch of Vault festival, this one woman show tells of the trials and tribulations of a Chinese acting student – Wanke Huang making her way into the UK acting industry. Written and performed by Chenxing Liu this play is full of dark comedy and intense drama.

Performing in a small basement room of The Glitch makes this piece feel intimate and powerful. The writing is clever and works well at telling the story. Liu’s story is one which I’m sure will resonate with many. The piece moves through Wanke Huang’s preparations for a first audition, reminder herself to ‘Be Water’ and that water can take many forms and so she must be adaptable to all situations. Upon attending the audition, we hear of the racial tensions felt by the Chinese community following COVID-19 and how small micro aggressions were found everywhere. The tensions escalate as Huang is the victim of a racially motivated hate crime on the London Underground. This is an intense moment in the piece and is performed incredibly with an intense raw emotion.
Liu is a force to be reckoned with in this play, her stage presence and ability to captivate an audience is a wonder to behold. She draws us close, has us hanging on her every word and then delights us with her comedy.
It would be a delight to see this play be given more of a showcase, I would love to know more of this story and think it is an important one that should be shared.
