⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When I saw there was a one woman show at Edinburgh Fringe about wrestling, I was immediately interested. I was not expecting such a fantastic, heart wrenching and raw story from Tegan Verheul.

Tegan opens the show in the way any wrestling show starts, there’s entrance music, there’s chanting and there’s brilliant crowd work. Tegan tells us of her love of wrestling, something which she had no interest in until she met her ex-husband and suddenly her eyes were opened to the world of finishers, Royal Rumbles and pure unadulterated violence.

Tegan’s passion for wrestling is clear from the outset, this is clearly her biggest love and she is unashamedly proud of it. She does not at any point assume that the audience are wrestling fans, she softly teaches us phrases and jargon of the world so we don’t get lost along the way. She tells us of some of her favourite wrestlers, her all time best matches and of the parties her and her husband hosted, all dressed in their best wrestling merch with friends.

Even if you’re not a wrestling fan, there is another thread to this show – the one of Tegan’s relationship and it’s breakdown. This is where Tegan shines, she has such a warm charismatic persona that we are fully taken in by her. Her story is one that many of us relate to, feeling rejected by the one we love. Putting blame on ourselves when we are made to feel small and unimportant and then making a bad choice in a twist I don’t think anyone expected. Tegan does not shy away from the sadness or her own part in the breakdown of her relationship in this part of the show. She is open, honest and vulnerable with the audience which just makes us love her more.

This is a beautiful show which will pull on your heartstrings as well as boost your love of wrestling if you already have one, if not then you will likely gain one after seeing this show.
